Kicking Off Campaign Season
Election Day is only one month away, Virginia! I was glad to kick off campaign season this September at Congressman Bobby Scott’s Labor Day cookout, alongside my friend and Virginia Senate President Pro Temp, Senator Louise Lucas. Thank you to Congressman Scott – the unofficial dean of Virginia’s congressional delegation – for the invitation and opportunity to speak at this event.

September Special Session
On September 7th, Virginia’s General Assembly reconvened for a one-day Special Session in Richmond. The same day, Governor Glenn Youngkin was in Maine campaigning for that state’s racist former governor – a man who claims to have invented MAGA politics, calling himself “Trump before Trump.”

While Youngkin was buddying up with Maine’s Trump, the House of Delegates had some legislative business to address. I was proud to lead the House Democrats during our brief Special Session. Read full coverage of our day in Richmond from the Washington Post.
Cruising the Commonwealth
Invite House Democratic Leader Don Scott to your political or community event!
Thank you to the NOVA Democrats for inviting me up for a visit! I was glad to meet with members of the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia and attend the Mt. Vernon Democrats Ice Cream Social.

Also, in September, I sat down with Service Employees International Union President Mary Kay Henry and a panel of SEIU members in Richmond. Please visit this link to view our discussion on workers’ rights. It is encouraging to see these essential workers beginning to be treated like they are actually essential. Thank you to SEIU VA 512 and 32BJ for the invitation to join this critical panel discussion

Home in Hampton Roads
Last month I attended the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Legislative Reception. As a member of the regional delegation, I know the importance of ensuring that the policies Democrats implemented to support economic development in Hampton Roads are not rolled back. I will always fight to grow and maintain investments in our region, and I am dedicated to making clean energy sector jobs a reality here at home.

I had the opportunity this past week to tour the soon-to-open casino facility on Victory Boulevard. The very first permanent casino in Virginia’s history is slated to open in early 2023 right here in the city of Portsmouth. The $300M+ facility will create over 1,000 permanent jobs and amount to the largest private sector investment in Portsmouth’s history. In fact, more than half of the casino’s minority and minority-owned business investors are Portsmouth residents or business owners.

It is particularly exciting to see casino employees already active in our community. Just this past week, casino employees were on hand at Portsmouth’s Wesley Community Service Center to lend a hand packaging food and clothing and sorting children’s books.
The casino has held five job fairs throughout the Hampton Roads region, and hiring efforts continue. For more information, please visit: https://www.riverscasinoportsmouth.com/careers-at-rivers.
Signing the Inflation Reduction Act
House Democratic Caucus Chair Charniele Herring and I attended a celebration on the White House Lawn in honor of the signing of the landmark Inflation Reduction Act. This law represents another victory for working families from a Democratic Congress and the Biden Administration. Virginia is fortunate to have responsible leaders in Washington working on real solutions, from bringing down prescription drug prices to delivering the right incentives for creating good-paying jobs for workers.
